Commercial lighting specialists.

Great lighting design is a result of creativity, knowledge and experience.

Lighting design is a crucial part of the commercial design process. It is here that we can explore product options, placement ideas and configuration types to ensure your project is perfectly lit. Whether it is great design, user comfort and wellbeing, achieving compliance, saving on energy bills or ensuring return on investment, we will tailor each scheme to help you achieve your objective.

Commercial lighting design solutions.

As trusted lighting experts, we are constantly pushing our technical capabilities and punch well above our weight. It’s our competent use of lighting design software, expert product knowledge and superb visualisation skills that make us shine. But it’s our ability to design bespoke luminaires and complex systems for your project or even produce special luminaires using new technologies that sets us truly apart.

As part of our commitment to provide the best service to our clients, we continuously invest in growing our in-house skills. At the same time, we like to share our knowledge. We are a part of the RIBA CPD providers network and offer CPD seminars covering topics that are close to our heart.

Why is good lighting so important?

  • Health & Wellbeing
Good lighting can directly affect the health and wellbeing of the users in the space. Poor lighting on the other hand, can lead to fatigue, headaches, migraines and eye strain.

  • Sustainability
Upgrading your lighting can lead to a more sustainable installation. Longer lifespan aside, professional lighting design using the latest LED technology and movement or daylight sensors can help you decrease the number of actual luminaires, using energy when it is needed.
  • Look & Feel
Architectural and office lighting are intrinsic to the look and feel of any commercial project. Designed well, lighting can compliment a building, enhance the interior design and maintain continuity with the rest of the design scheme.

  • Improved Productivity
Upgrading your lighting can lead to a more sustainable installation. Longer lifespan aside, professional lighting design using the latest LED technology and movement or daylight sensors can help you decrease the number of actual luminaires, using energy when it is needed.

The lighting design process.

  • Concept plans
  • Detailed design

  • Revisions
  • Emergency lighting design

No project evolves in a straight line and we are aware there will be changes and revisions. Many revisions. To achieve the full potential of your project, it’s wise to involve lighting designers from the early design stages. We work best when we are aware of your design objectives, the guidelines you are trying to achieve and deadlines you have to meet.

We can be there throughout the entire project, that sometimes takes years. But we are equally capable of picking up a fast paced last minute project that just needs to get done.

Tailoring the lighting design around you.

We understand the procurement process of commercial lighting to the very last granular detail and appreciate the different needs of our clients throughout various project stages.

We love contributing to beautifully designed spaces.

Lighting design requirements:

Good lighting design is an outcome of regular communication between the client, their design team and the project engineer. We at 299 will be working alongside all parties involved on the most complex of projects. Whether it’s the design element, the compliance, even the commissioning of the control system, we will take care of it all. Some clients would specify every product on their project, others come to us with an open brief.

However you would like to work with us, these are the minimal requirements for lighting design:

  • DWG drawings and (or) reflected ceiling plans (RCPs)
  • Sections or at least ceiling heights
  • Reflectances for non standard ceilings
  • Confirmation of what lighting guidelines you are working to. Don’t worry if you don’t know, we will advise you
  • Look and feel document
  • Furniture layouts for CAT B fit out
  • Any building restrictions we should be aware of

Book a call with a Light Engineer to discuss your lighting design needs:

“Once the concept has been approved, we will build the project in DIALux to scale. We will ensure that the project performs technically whilst maintaining the design aesthetics and conforms to any specified lighting guidelines. “

Lighting design Q&A.

What are the benefits of working with a lighting designer?
Its the same benefits as using an architect to design a building, or a mechanical consultant to design your HVAC system. A lighting designer is an expert in their field, who understands all of the recommendations for lighting, and can create a suitable scheme to your specification.

How does the design service work?
Quite simply, we consult on the design requirements, budgets & specifications with you. We create some proposals and once signed off, can continue with a full technical design package. We can even do the emergency lighting design (which is a legal requirement in any commercial project).

Do you visit the site and/or work from architects’ plans?
Every project is different, but we try to be as present as possible. So if we need to attend site, we will. If we need to visit a client, or sit down with the architect, we will. We do work with the project design package.

What types of light fittings are available for commercial lighting design?
The world is your oyster! Take a look at our products page, and if you can’t see what you want then give us a call and discuss your requirements.

How to understand lux or illumination level requirements for commercial spaces?
Design requirements can be complex, and different on every project. Our design calculation packs however have an easy compliance check system, to show you what areas comply with the lighting recommendations set out in the specification.

What light fittings are <19 UGR?
None. This is a common misconception. UGR (Unified Glare Rating) is a design calculation, not a specific luminaire parameter. Whilst many luminaires are capable of being used in a scheme that achieves UGR <19, it all depends on how they’re used in a space (mounting height, output, orientation etc.)

What are some energy efficient lighting design for new businesses?
Invest in LED lighting, and an appropriate lighting control system! This doesn’t have to cost the earth, but can save up to 75% of your lighting electricity bill compared to standard manual switching.
