Just a stones throw from the corner of Giltspur Street, a small street in Smithfield, Cock Lane dates back to medieval times and is riddled with murders, brothels and ghost stories.It’s the biggest glory is the cherubic Golden Boy of Pye Corner, a small monument marking the spot where the 1666 Great Fire of London was stopped. Today, it is one of the idyllic cobbled streets hidden away in the heart of the city amongst the beautiful architecture of Old London.

In 2017, the ground floor and lower ground floor of this old and tired building was purchased by private prosecution specialists who specialise in ‘white collar crime’.

Approached by Collings Electrical, in January 2017, our team supported the electrical contractor and the interior fitout experts IPS interiors from the initial design stages. The client’s brief was to bring the dark and dated office space to a bright and modern specification. Despite the serious nature of the client’s business, they wished to create a stimulating workplace with a feel of modern media space. 

The client also wanted to make the most of the 4m ceiling height, utilising the exposed surfaces and turning them to a feature. Boasting high ceilings, space lacks much natural daylight.

The 299 team have created the lighting layout, product specification and calculations for this Cat B fit out. Full lighting design and emergency lighting plan were produced alongside the renders to help visualise the effect of the new lighting scheme. Driven by visual appeal and a practical desire to light the space well, the scheme celebrates many geometrical shapes.

THE DESIGN BRIEF.

Connectivity between old and new as well as improving the use of the space were the main objectives of the design brief for this ambitious development. With the project aiming to achieve the BREEAM accreditation, the new lighting had to meet high efficiency criteria. 

Introducing a new electrical infrastructure and exposed services for the entire scheme and bringing quality office and architectural lighting was only part of the story. The attention to detail was an absolute paramount for this development scheme.

#1 LOWER GROUND FLOOR.

With the combination of high ceilings and lack of daylight, the emphasis was put on illuminating the lower ground floor and delivering a comfortable lighting scheme.

The high output version of the Lopen Suspended in standard sizes of 1682mm and 2242mm was used to illuminate the open plan office space and 5 individual offices. The Lopen boasts outstanding performance and energy efficiency and its clean-cut look make it an ideal luminaire for general office lighting.

#2 GROUND FLOOR.

In the reception area, bespoke linear systems creating square shapes were specified. Thanks to its versatility, the Lopen suspended lends itself to bespoke lighting schemes. Two bespoke sized linear luminaires of 2062 x 2062 mm with lit corners were created and installed as feature lighting in the reception area.

With the help of the Lopen’s minimalist suspension kit, the luminaires appear to be floating in the space. The 80mm body of the Lopen is slim yet substantial enough to make a bold statement. The same design was repeated throughout the meeting rooms.

For the office space, the Lopen suspended in several different lengths was chosen. Circular shaped Talla Suspended fittings were also used in one of the meeting rooms. The whole scheme was delivered in a modern white finish as per the specification of the client.

The result is a visually interesting lighting scheme, giving this Cat B fit out a new energy and providing the occupier with a comfortable lighting in a difficult space.

It is to the compliment of the electrical contractor, that the bespoke square luminaires have been installed with a lot of attention to detail, turning the lighting into a main feature of the fit out.

1. WHAT WAS THE DESIGN BRIEF FOR THE PROJECT?

Our client, a law practice who specialize in ‘white collar crime’ was buying the Ground and Lower Ground floor of a dark and dated office building and wanted to comprehensively refurbish the space and bring it up to a bright and modern specification. They wanted to make the most of the almost 4m ceiling height and were keen to keep the services exposed, making them a feature. The offices had to be more akin to media space than the stereotypical solicitors practice.

 

2. WHAT WERE YOU TRYING TO ACHIEVE WITH THE LIGHTING?

The lighting had to compliment the exposed surfaces theme. The space lacks natural light, so the fittings had to illuminate the space well. The occupants of these offices work long hours so the lighting had to be comfortable to work under for extended periods of time.

We came across 299 as we know Derwent London produce schemes that fit within our brief very well. We noted that they had supplied lighting to them and we enquired. Their specification and upfront sales package were very impressive.
