If you decide to run your business from a Victorian castle and don’t actually expect your staff to be working in Victorian conditions, you would have to invest serious money at some point. The financial comparison website money.co.uk operates from a rather unique location- a beautiful castle in Cirencester. The property has not had any major alterations in years but most importantly, the workplace did not reflect upon the company’s vision for the future.
When we were approached by the workplace design and build specialist Interaction at the end of 2015 with a design brief of bold and one off office scheme, with a focus on functionality, our first reaction were slightly raised eyebrows. A castle? Really?
Our team bounced the ideas back and forth with the designers at Interaction for months to ensure, that the client would be offered the best office lighting scheme for the varied and individual requirements of their staff. The whole design scheme was tailored around wellbeing enabling people to work the way they want.

The main challenge of the project was to provide good quality lighting for large open space offices with skylights and exposed services. Two large bespoke rectangular fittings of size 7.3 x 2.3 m and 6.9 m x 2.3 m were suspended in the offices on the first floor. The anodised finish of the luminaire makes a striking contrast to the air conditioning pipes painted in purple. Thanks to the LED circuit board being only 280 mm long, the Lopen lends itself to bespoke office lighting scheme allowing us to create a very accurate design.
The same idea was also brought to a meeting room where a suspended bespoke rectangle of 3 x 2 m provides illumination above the desk. The anodised finish of the luminaire in contrast with air conditioning pipes painted in bright pink make a modern statement with the opal diffuser bringing softness into the design.
In order to keep the office lighting minimalist and quietly compliment the vibrant design of the workplace, the Lopen Suspended was utilised for the general commercial lighting scheme. Variation of lengths was used for smaller offices, hot desking areas, breakout spaces and the gym. A strong visual impact could be achieved by installing the luminaires in a zig-zag pattern or a repetitive pattern at an angle.
Custom RAL grey colour was used on some of the Lopen fittings which were ceiling mounted in smaller areas used for relaxing or informal meetings.
In the corridors, bespoke wall mounted profiles in a custom RAL colour were supplied. Mounted on the wall vertically and then coming off the wall at 90-degree angle, these bespoke lamppost like luminaires were used as a feature lighting in the corridors.
We also supplied circular suspended fitting Talla for the staircase and the LEDS-C4 can style fitting Exit for the circulation areas.
The project was delivered in two stages whilst staff were in occupation. The result of the £3 million investment is a first class workplace with a unique vibe giving everyone at money.co.uk a workplace like no other.
