The state of the art £40M office development One Causeway in Stains offers approximately 120,000 sq ft of premium ready to occupy Grade A office accommodation and is the first building of the next generation campus, The Park. With the excellent location and super connectivity to London Heathrow and the M25, the exciting scheme offers a connected mixed-use community with hotels, small business units and retail, all to attract a diverse mix of users and occupants.

The beautifully curved building was designed by Arup and features a fair-faced concrete structure and soffits, circular columns, unitised cladding and a displacement system beneath raised floors to provide services. The ambitious scheme was then brought to life by BAM construction, who have been selected as the main contractor.

The 299 team have been involved with the ground floor design of this impressive project. We were approached in September 2019 by the design team at Spratley and Partners with their design concept for the ground floor. The team at Spratley knew exactly what products they would like to use for the scheme. We assisted the designers with the product selection, lighting design and calculations, including the emergency lighting design. Working closely with the design team and the main contractor, we ensured the made to measure architectural feature lighting was made and delivered to fulfill the architect’s vision.

THE DESIGN BRIEF.

The main idea behind the design brief was “first impression counts”. And as such, the reception area was to set the expectations for the rest of the building. The architect’s vision for the feature lighting was simple yet bold, contemporary and unexpected. The circular shape of the halo fittings mirrors the round shapes present in the interior design and their sheer size is impressive.

With the aim to keep the interior design consistent across the entire ground floor, the designer’s favourite Rio Surface mounted was used to frame the reception desk. Rio is the ultimate performance driven linear lighting with a contemporary clean-cut design. It is perfectly suited for projects requiring made to measure linear systems.

Rio is perfectly suited for projects requiring made to measure linear systems. Proven and tested on many successfully delivered schemes, Rio provides comfortable lighting for the user. The same linear system was as general lighting for the toilets through the entire building.

The unique wow effect was created by eight large halo pendants Rydal Suspended, spaced out in an ad hoc pattern. The fittings were delivered in 5 different sizes, ranging from standard 1200mm all the way to impressive 5000 mm diameter. Fitted with opal diffusers, the large architectural pendants emit soft light. Using a minimalist suspension kit, they are seemingly floating in space. These were supplied to site in sections and mounted on site.

Above the sleek reception desk, 8 custom Bellart suspended were used to create a striking visual feature. Installed at different heights, they stand out against the structured wall behind the reception desk. The 600 mm long Bellarts were supplied in black colour with bronze interior ring, giving the pendants that extra detail.

All architectural lighting was specified and supplied in a contemporary matte black finish, enhancing the contemporary colour scheme of the interior design.

The Rio linear systems and the large Rydal luminaires were supplied with DALI compatible control gear allowing the lighting to function with the lighting control system. Integrated emergency lighting was supplied in some luminaires following the emergency lighting design.

The final result is a stunning reception area setting a welcoming tone for the rest of the building. The made to measure architectural lighting plays a vital part of the bold interior design, allowing the biophilia and the contemporary furniture to take the centre stage. And as the visitors enter the space, they most probably pause for a second to admire the daring large circles of light.
